A couple years ago, I went through a time where I was broken, exhausted, and ready to throw up my hands…not on God, but on church and the politics and judgement that always seemed to follow. I sat down to write one night and what you’ll read below is what came out of it… So if you’re being made to feel like you have to change your appearance/personality or water yourself down to come to God – YOU DON’T. God wants you to come to Him – what you choose to or need to change is between you and God.
Glass Houses – Spoken Word
It’s not based on the volume of the music or the clothes that we wear;
The instruments we play or the songs we may share.
Whether you have coffee in the foyer or you’d never think of such a thing;
It’s not even based on how much money you may bring.
When God looks at his church he looks at the heart;
Who cares what we’re wearing if we’re falling apart?
There are things far more important to him than a few silly rules;
He wants us all to know that we’re acting like fools.
We push them away when he says draw them near.
They come to us for guidance and instead leave with fear.
But wait – isn’t it love we’re supposed to share?
Yes we’re supposed to take them in and show them that we care.
He says “just do this: push outward appearances to the back;
Because when your focus gets off of me things get all out of whack.”
And oh the music, how this divides us so!
Who cares if there’s a full band or just a simple piano?
Whether you sing hymns to God or you rap for Jesus’ name,
Who are you to say He doesn’t love them all the same?
The lyrics all shout His praise – the only difference is the beat.
Who cares what it sounds like if He’s coming down to meet…
To meet us where we are – isn’t that what it’s all about?
Whether He comes in a whisper or He comes with a shout!
God wants to see us accepting others and showing his love
He hates when we condemn and make ourselves seem above.
No matter the circumstances He loves us all the same
So when we’re called up to see him, I hope I’m not to blame…
To blame for any soul being lost
Because I see the impact and I know how big the cost.
I just wish we could see the massive effect
When we use our own standards and decide to neglect…
Neglect all the people who already feel alone… Jesus said “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”
So if that isn’t you, then please step down from your soapbox
Because people in glass houses – they shouldn’t throw rocks.
What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
Have you went through something similar?
